New Learners — Start Your Driving Journey with Confidence

Taking your first step towards becoming a driver is exciting — and a little nerve-wracking! At Eastend Driving School, we make sure every new learner feels supported, safe, and confident from their very first lesson. With friendly, DVSA-approved instructors and tailored courses, you’ll gain the skills to drive independently and pass your test with ease.

Tips for First-Time Learners

  • Book your provisional licence early: You’ll need it before you can take any driving lessons. Apply through the official DVLA website.
  • Choose the right instructor: Look for DVSA-approved, experienced, and patient instructors — just like our Eastend team!
  • Start with shorter lessons: Begin with 2 hour sessions to build confidence without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Be consistent: Regular weekly lessons help you progress faster and retain what you learn.
  • Ask questions: Your instructor is there to help — no question is too small when learning to drive.
  • Stay calm on mistakes: Every learner makes them! They’re part of the process — focus on learning, not perfection.

New Learner FAQs

Quick answers to the most common questions from first-time learners in East London.

How many lessons will I need?
It varies by learner, but most beginners take around 40 to 60 hours of professional instruction to reach test standard.       We recommend booking lessons in 10-hour or 20-hour blocks to build steady progress, with flexibility to top up as needed.       Your assessment lesson will give a personalised estimate based on your ability and confidence.

Should I choose manual or automatic?
If you want the freedom to drive any car in future, choose manual. If you prefer a simpler start or want to focus on road skills first,       automatic can be a great option. We teach both and can advise during your assessment.

What happens in my first lesson?
We start with a quick chat about goals and any previous experience, then cover the cockpit drill (seat, mirrors, controls),       moving off and stopping safely, and basic positioning on quiet roads. You’ll finish with clear feedback and next steps.

Do I need to pass the theory test before starting lessons?
No. You can begin practical lessons right away. In fact, driving practice helps your theory learning.       We recommend studying the theory alongside your lessons for the best progress.

Where do you pick up from?
We cover East London areas including Docklands, Isle of Dogs, Canary Wharf, Goodmayes, Hornchurch, Limehouse, and Chadwell Heath.       Pick-ups can be arranged from home, work, or college within our coverage.

I’m nervous. Can we take it slowly?
Absolutely. Our DVSA-approved instructors specialise in patient, step-by-step coaching.       We’ll set achievable goals for every lesson and build your confidence at your pace.

Which course should I book as a beginner?
Start with a 2-hour assessment so we can tailor a plan. Most beginners then choose a       10-hour block (£350) or a 20-hour block (£680) to build momentum,       and top up until they’re test-ready (typically 40–60 hours in total).
